If you live on the internet, like I do, you quickly come to realize there’s only one city in the world that really matters. I’m speaking, of course, about New York City, which has an important primary election today.
A number of candidates are vying for the Democratic nomination for mayor, but the race will come down to former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who resigned in 2021 after admitting to sexual harassment, and New York Assembly Member and verified hot person Zohran Mamdani. Mamdani is Muslim, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, and has campaigned on rent freezing, free buses, and publicly owned grocery stores. Andrew Cuomo is Andrew Cuomo.
Since he announced his campaign for mayor in October 2024, he has become a darling of the progressive left, in no small part due to his incredible digital campaign:
Pod Save America’s Jon Favreau made an appeal to his fellow left-of-centers and got a little roasted for it.
He really does seem like he’s having a fun time.
Memes aside: on Monday morning, with less than 24 hours until election day, an Emerson poll put Mamdani ahead of Cuomo, lighting Twitter on fire. The demographics of the poll tell quite a story about the progressive wing of the Democratic Party:
Win or lose, Zohran’s campaign is an early sign of what the 2026 midterms may bring next year.
It wouldn’t be 2025 without a lil fight about abundance.
As far as his actual detractors go, you couldn’t pick a better slate of opps:
The worst accounts on Twitter, and also Azealia Banks.
I really can’t explain this one:
The funny (“funny”) think about Cuomo is that nobody seems to be rooting for him? Sentiment towards him ranges from begrudging acceptance to white hot hatred. And, can you blame people?
Speaking of haters:
“All my haters become my waiters when I sit down at the table of success.”
So said one Mayor Eric Adams, who will also compete in the election this fall, running for re-election, this time as an independent. Eric Adams: demonstrably corrupt (but, like, not even that corrupt by big city mayoral standards?), quite good on housing and sanitation, and also objectively the funniest mayor New York City has had in my lifetime. While Zohran and Cuomo battle it out, he’s just out here posting through it.
Hey, speaking of sex pests, guess who else is on the ballot today?
Best city in da world!!
