On Thursday, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced ChatGPT’s new image generation product, pouring another tank of gas on the already burning AI culture wars. Immediately, people across the internet showed off hyper-realistic images and recreation of popular media in new formats, generating an equal amount of excitement and concerns about a future dominated by AI slop.
One viral tweet kicked off an explosion of images in the style of Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki’s Studio Ghibli, which by now you’ve likely seen across social media.
Many people pointed out the deep irony of Miyazaki having spoken out in no unclear terms about what he sees as the soullessness of AI-generated art.
I am utterly disgusted. If you really want to make creepy stuff, you can go ahead and do it. I would never wish to incorporate this technology into my work at all. I strongly feel that this is an insult to life itself.
Of course, our already terminally online administration couldn’t sit out the memes.
But, echoing back to its horrifying AI-generated Gaza video from last month, the White House reached new levels of stomach-churning with its meme of the deportation of a woman convinced of fentanyl trafficking.
I do think we ought to consider just shutting off the Internet for a bit.
