One of the key talking points for the Harris campaign all along has been that scores of ranking Trump officials not only aren’t endorsing him, but have gone so far as to say he’s a unique threat to democracy. That rhetoric got dialed up to 11 this week following back-to-back bombshell (if those exist anymore) revelations from Trump’s former Chief of Staff General John Kelly.

This week, I asked Kelly about their exchange. He told me that when Trump raised the subject of “German generals,” Kelly responded by asking, “‘Do you mean Bismarck’s generals?’” He went on: “I mean, I knew he didn’t know who Bismarck was, or about the Franco-Prussian War. I said, ‘Do you mean the kaiser’s generals? Surely you can’t mean Hitler’s generals? And he said, ‘Yeah, yeah, Hitler’s generals.’ I explained to him that Rommel had to commit suicide after taking part in a plot against Hitler.” Kelly told me Trump was not acquainted with Rommel. –The Atlantic

Meanwhile, Trump surrogates did their best to spin all this.

It’s been so long that it’s easy to forget that in 2016, the Access Hollywood tape did prompt a slew of Republican disavowals and did nearly end the Trump campaign, only to be upended in the eleventh hour by all the e-mails nonsense. But in 2024, praising Hitler will just kinda come and go…

Even so, Kamala Harris previewed a potential closing argument, tying these latest quotes to his recent “enemy from within” rhetoric.

Online lefties are mad about this tweet but he’s not wrong!

A few things can be true: Trump’s McDonald’s stunt on Sunday was, unfortunately, quite good. Just was. Also, food contamination: very, very bad! But to quote a Hall-of-Fame tweet, “I feel bad for our country. But this is tremendous content.”
