Last night, the DNC kicked off with the Miss America pageant of politics, the roll call. As always, the delegates from each state cast their votes, officially making Kamala Harris the Democratic nominee for president. This time, however, they were backed by a song selected by that state, turning the whole thing into a dance party.

If this were a competition between states, Georgia probably won the night:

I deeply love this even if Get Low gives me unholy flashbacks to high school dances

The ’90s Chicago Bulls really cooked with this one:

all things go, all things go

Oregon came out to Float On, from Modest Mouse:

Indie sleaze, a term we all used in the 2000s.
For my fellow millennials – this is Chappell Roan.

New York, in keeping with the theme of this roll call, got Empire State of Mind:

Pennsylvania:

This ain’t (is) Texas:

Wisconsin:

The night closed out with Kamala Harris’ home state, the great state of California:

At the end of the roll call, they cut to Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in Milwaukee – at the exact venue where the GOP held the RNC a few weeks ago.

In this newsletter, we love the roll call:

It is now!

And an NPR explainer for each state’s featured track here.

In case you haven’t experienced the power of the 1996 Macarena:

In what would on any other night be the highlight of the night, our future First Gentleman Doug Emhoff was introduced by what was imo one of the best videos in DNC history:

This video was produced by Kerstin Emhoff btw.

The speech itself was a parade of wife guyism, in the best possible way:

So all three parents in this blended family are just making the rest of us look bad, huh

Part 2 continued here!
