When Vice President Kamala Harris took over from Joe Biden as presumptive nominee for the Democratic ticket, a number of folks – cynically if not pragmatically – assumed that Trump and his MAGA movement would not be able to stop themselves from devolving into the explicit racism that alienates the majority of the country. We got our first taste of it during Donald Trump’s remarks in an interview at the National Association of Black Journalists.
When you’ve lost Fox News…
Even before the conference, there was a debate about whether the association should even be interviewing Trump at all, with one co-chair resigning. After the interview, journalists remain just as divided:
Or they’ll do this:
Having demonstrated (by extreme relative standards) over the past few months an unusual capacity to walk back or at least pivot away from tactics that weren’t working, Trump is reverting to form and doubling, tripling down on the remarks.
For good reason, his comments about Kamala Harris’ race will make every headline, but don’t sleep on the rest of this train wreck.
Over on the other ticket, the veepstakes is drawing to a close, with Kamala previewing an announcement early next week, with the pair’s first joint rally scheduled for in Philadelphia. Due to both the location of the rally and various leaks to the press, conventional wisdom puts Pennsylvanian Governor Josh Shapiro as the most likely choice.
To be fair, you gotta take the rally location with a major grain of salt.
Still, in part because of an article in The Atlantic calling out Democrats for their criticism of Shapiro on the issue of Israel, his record has been the subject of scrutiny today.
Writes Rosenberg:
And yet, activists have not organized in force to discredit any of the non-Jewish contenders for vice president on these grounds. There are no viral memes against “Killer Kelly” or “War-Crimes Walz.” Either the activists involved are extraordinarily lazy and never thought to investigate the other VP possibilities, or they think that Jews are uniquely untrustworthy. Seen in context, the “Genocide Josh” campaign and its tendentious reading of Shapiro’s record look less like a legitimate political critique than a rigged litmus test imposed on the Jewish lawmaker alone.
Online Dems more broadly have not wavered in their support for Tim Walz.
Though there is this.
In today’s Women’s 1500m Freestyle swim, Katie Ledecky, well, Ledecky’d.
My regular “Olympics – miscellaneous” section is quickly becoming my favorite recurring segment.
After Simone Biles came for former teammate Mykayla Skinner (not McKayla Maroney!) in an Instagram caption, pretty much the entire USA gymnastics apparatus backed her up:
Our first contender for Olympics side character of the day:
Have you ever been confronted by something you didn’t know you’ve wanted your whole life?
For years, “tech bro accidentally re-invents the bus” was a somewhat tired if not fairly accurate trope. With AI, we’re now pivoting, in this case quite literally, to “tech bro accidentally re-invents Her.”
Apparently there are two?
Good night. 🙂
